Scripture lesson: John 2:1-11 The Wedding at Cana

Time to Reflect: This is one of the stories where it is important not to worry about what isn't said but to focus on what is said. The story does show Jesus in a real life human setting, a wedding, and he and his mother have a really human mother/son kind of interaction and his first miracle, in John's Gospel, is creating wine (not grape juice!) for a wedding.

Moving through the day: Picture yourself at the wedding and watching the proceedings. No one seems bowled over by the event, the only comment is why this wine wasn't served before everyone became drunk! How does all this connect with your view of Jesus?

Scripture:

On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4And Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come.’ 5His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’ 6Now standing there were six stone water-jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7Jesus said to them, ‘Fill the jars with water.’ And they filled them up to the brim. 8He said to them, ‘Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward.’ So they took it. 9When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10and said to him, ‘Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now.’ 11Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him.

Scripture lesson: 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 Who's spiritual gift is better?

Time to reflect: This letter was written to a church that was badly split. Among other things one of the areas of disagreement was over who was the more spiritual, based on their particular (God given) ability and church office. Does sound like a real life church doesn't it? Paul was trying to counter this human tendency for one-up-man-ship. We're all different but we're all on the same level. Everything we have to offer is equally valid. (It is my studied opinion that “tongues” in Paul's writing is the ability to read aloud, or better yet, translate Hebrew, not glossolalia).

Moving through the day: What special gift do you have to offer the Church? Pray that you can offer and use it without pretension.

Spiritual Gifts

12Now concerning spiritual gifts,* brothers and sisters,* I do not want you to be uninformed. 2You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says ‘Let Jesus be cursed!’ and no one can say ‘Jesus is Lord’ except by the Holy Spirit.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.

Galatians 4:4-7 Adopted children

Scripture lesson: The Christ event transforms us from “slaves” to adopted children of God. This passage isn't interested in “how” this happens, only that it has happened.

Time to reflect: This is a cause for joy and thanksgiving.

But when the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, 5in order to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as children. 6And because you are children, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our* hearts, crying, ‘Abba!* Father!’ 7So you are no longer a slave but a child, and if a child then also an heir, through God.

Scripture lesson: Psalm 40:1-3 People are watching

Time to reflect: This passage begins with “I waited patiently...” and ends with “many will see.” Consciously or unconsciously as believers we are watched to see if we really do trust God.

Moving through the day: Pray for patience and endurance

Psalm 40

Thanksgiving for Deliverance and Prayer for Help

To the leader. Of David. A Psalm.
1I waited patiently for the Lord;
he inclined to me and heard my cry.
2He drew me up from the desolate pit,*
   out of the miry bog,
and set my feet upon a rock,
   making my steps secure.
3He put a new song in my mouth,
a song of praise to our God.
Many will see and fear,
and put their trust in the Lord.

Monday

Scripture lesson: 1 Peter 4:7-11 Instructions to prepare for the “end-time”

Serious instructions for “getting right with God” before the Second Coming. And what do these instructions include? Love, being hospitable, being good stewards, serving one another... It isn't about “being” good or buttering up God, but taking care of others.

Pray for God's guidance on keeping focused on what really matters.

The end of all things is near;* therefore be serious and discipline yourselves for the sake of your prayers. 8Above all, maintain constant love for one another, for love covers a multitude of sins. 9Be hospitable to one another without complaining. 10Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. 11Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.

Scripture lesson: Luke 3:15-17,21-22 John the Baptist

Time to Reflect: Even John was expecting a different kind of Messiah than Jesus turned out to be. John was expecting an angry Messiah that would “clean house,” destroying all those who didn't repent.

Moving through the day: Think about how different things would have been, and how it would have affected you if Jesus had been this kind of harsh, judgmental kind of Messiah.

Scripture:

As the people were filled with expectation, and all were questioning in their hearts concerning John, whether he might be the Messiah,* 16John answered all of them by saying, ‘I baptize you with water; but one who is more powerful than I is coming; I am not worthy to untie the thong of his sandals. He will baptize you with* the Holy Spirit and fire. 17His winnowing-fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing-floor and to gather the wheat into his granary; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.’

The Baptism of Jesus

21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened, 22and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, ‘You are my Son, the Beloved;* with you I am well pleased.’*
