Scripture lesson: Ezekiel 31:10-14 Beware

Time to reflect: The “it” of this passage is Assyria. The fuller passage (31:1ff) is warning Egypt to watch it – if they get too proud and sure of their power they might end up like Assyria that conquered the Middle East but collapsed rather quickly.

Moving through the day: Pray that our nation be humble and reliant on God.

'Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: Because it towered on high, lifting its top above the thick foliage, and because it was proud of its height, I handed it over to the ruler of the nations, for him to deal with according to its wickedness. I cast it aside, and the most ruthless of foreign nations cut it down and left it. Its boughs fell on the mountains and in all the valleys; its branches lay broken in all the ravines of the land. All the nations of the earth came out from under its shade and left it. All the birds of the air settled on the fallen tree, and all the beasts of the field were among its branches. Therefore no other trees by the waters are ever to tower proudly on high, lifting their tops above the thick foliage. No other trees so well-watered are ever to reach such a height; they are all destined for death, for the earth below, among mortal men, with those who go down to the pit.

Scripture lesson: Jeremiah 23:1-4 Leaders

Time to reflect: The “shepherds” here were the governmental leaders of Judah. They were bad leaders that made bad decisions. Jeremiah, in the midst of condemning the evil leaders promised the Judeans better government some time in the future.

Moving Through The Day: Pray for our national and world leaders that they might be good shepherds.

"Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!" declares the LORD. Therefore this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: "Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done," declares the LORD. "I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing," declares the LORD.
